Colonial History: In 480 BC, Malta was colonized by the Phoecians, who gave it its name. In 218 BC, Malta was conquered by the Roman empire and flourished under its rule. In 870 AD, Malta was conquered by the Arabs, who ruled for more than 200 years. The Normans then captured Malta in 1090 AD, followed by the colonization by the French in 1266. Shortly afterwards in 1283, it was taken by the Spanish. Through 1802, Britain did not leave Malta and was in control.
