Major Social Issues in Southern Europe
Wage Gap:
In 2016, women are just now starting to be paid as much as a man. Still in some countries that is a very distant dream. There is a large gap between pay in some of the former capitalistic countries because of the lack of education for women. Often times women are not educated and therefore cannot find a good paying job. Even in executive level jobs, women don't earn more than men because they are women and not men. Some countries are working towards trying to lower the difference while others don't have it as a priority.
LGBT Rights:
Throughout Southern Europe, there are more and more countries adopting legislation to fit the times. A pressing issue throughout the countries is LGBT rights. The rights of those that consider themelves lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender are just now in the past few years being taken under consideration. Since more and more people are coming out and publicly speaking about the problems they face because of what they identify as, is creating pressure for politicians and causing them to change legislation now allowing for those of the LGBT community to get married, to adopt children, and to be in a relationship.
Abortion:
This is a large problem in Italy because of its close proximity to Vatican City and most of the citizens are Roman Catholics that are pro-life. This is a problem because it is legal to receive one but most doctors won't perform them. This causes women to have to either go to a place where a doctor will perform one or leave the country and go receive one. Throughout Southern Europe, it is legal to receive an abortion, but in some places there is a waiting period, in others you can't receive one past 12 or 20 weeks, and in others there are very leniant laws that allow for abortions. In the countries where, abortions are allowed you must have a social reason to receive one. This causes women to go to other countries to receive one or to wait the amount of time needed.
Human's Rights:
In underdeveloped countries of Southern Europe, the rights of people are very minimal due to the fact that most of them used to be capitalistic. These countries are making headways on human's rights now in 2016. In Bosnia & Herzegovina, there are protests because the people are being discriminated against. The government has started to make headway on these issues, but there is still a long way to go.
