Colonial History: In 181 BC, the first colony was established in Slovenia by the Roman empire. They established the city that is now the capital. Following the fall of the Roman empire, the Frankish empire took over in the 8th century. The goal of that empire was to spread Christianity and they had control over Slovenia for over a millennium. From the 14th century until the end of World War I, Slovenia was under the reign of the Austrian Habsburg empire. This proved an issue for the Slavs as the Ottoman empire was constantly making advances. Napoleon and the French aided in the downfall of the Austrian Habsburg empire and then ruled in Slovenia for the time being. In 1929, Slovenia became a part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslav until after World War II.
